Smoke

August 5th, 2007

I’m always fascinated to see how product are made. The ‘Smoke’ furniture collection by Maarten Baas is totally different than anything else. He takes existing pieces of furniture like armchairs and chandeliers made of wood, and burns them to a certain point. Afterwards the objects get a new upholstery or electric wiring, and a layer of clear epoxy. So in the end, every object becomes a piece unique. You can buy some of them through moooi, a Dutch furniture brand.
The chair below was made for an axhibition called “Where There’s Smoke” in New York. He took design classics a lit them, in this case the Gerrit T. Rietveld’s 1934 Zig Zag chair.
Rediscovered through dezeen.
