As an engineer I assure you metal panels hurt during accidents the frame absorbs all of the crash energy. Panels hurt you on weight which adds to kenetic energy that you have to release during a crash. A tube frame is 10x stronger than a unibody frame. Think NASCAR or F1 the bodies are paper thin the frame is tubular.

Jeff, thanks for your comment! Indeed, you can really tell that Bangle isn't a marketing man.

Like the Smart car and its monobody skeleton, which is in many ways safer than a much larger car. If you've ever had to repair a regular car's bumper after a mere 5km/h fender bender, you know just how little the skin of most cars does for your protection.

I also wanted to say that, while I'm not a huge fan of Bangle's usual work at BMW, I appreciate the way he talks about the GINA in this video. It's more than just marketing-speak: his love for design, his familiarity with car culture, and yet his ability to still reconceptualize something so ubiquitous, comes through in not just the GINA as an object but also in his voice and demeanour in talking about the thinking behind it.

I couldn't either, but in the movie they mention that a metal skin isn't that import for crashes ... But the moving parts are very cool.
