Iwan Baan

July 31st, 2008

Iwan Baan is a Dutch photographer who documented the construction of the National Stadium in Beijing, that was designed by Herzog & de Meuron (don’t they have their own website?). I’m quite fascinated by this huge lamp in the first picture. Does anyone have some information about it?
You can find a lot of really nice architecture photography in Iwans portfolio.

I thought it was a loud speaker rather than a lamp?

Mmmh, could be. Or the light was inspired by some loud speaker?

don’t really now by what the lamp was inspired actually. but I installed it in paris for an exhibition about china at la “cité de l’architecture” last month. the lamp is made with transparent polyester and formed by several parts casted probably with the same mould. made me about the work of atelier van lieshout, a dutch artist who works a lot with polyester resin. but in my opinion there’s a lack of harmony in the botom of the lamp… (specially the square opening that contrasts with curves and lines of the rest of the object)

Julien, thank you for that info!

I cannot guarantee, but think it’s actually designed by HdM. A prototype of this light has been hanging in one of the rooms of the office in Basel for a couple of years already and they tend to design the lights for many of their projects in house.
