Venus – Natural Crystal Chair
October 10th, 2008I am quite a fan of rapid prototyping projects, but I’m not sure if this one qualifies. Venus is the latest project by Tokujin Yoshioka, a Japanese designer. It is a ‘Natural Crystal Chair’, the production process is so different than any other chair out there. A substrate made of polyester elastomer forms the skeleton and is submerged in a tank, here grow the crystals on that substrate.
Amazing stuff!

Looks like the crystal substance is alum (aluminum potassium sulfate) , which makes transparent octahedral crystals, is inexpensive and alum crystals are the type usually sutggested in children’s science fair cookbooks for making large crystals in saturated solutions using only water and alum. For large red crystals of the same shape use “chrome alum”.

It looks neat. I prefer stuff that’s functional as well as beautiful, but to each his own.
