Looks like the crystal substance is alum (aluminum potassium sulfate) , which makes transparent octahedral crystals, is inexpensive and alum crystals are the type usually sutggested in children’s science fair cookbooks for making large crystals in saturated solutions using only water and alum. For large red crystals of the same shape use “chrome alum”.
