We made the images above in Maya they are part of a larger exploration - Aviary Peacock seems cool though - we will have to check it out more. As Pieter says, there are many ways to achieve this. - G

You could achieve this result with any programmable tool ... processing, flash, scriptographer, ...
For me it is about the aesthetics.

The open source vector graphics editor Inkscape (similar to Illustrator) can do this too... it's called cloning, outputs vector graphics (svg) and exports to png etc. It's available here: http://www.inkscape.org/

But it's of course not only about the tools you know.

I probably don't have to tell you how amazing your projects are.

Yes, I just re-made it which took honestly took just something like 4 minutes. Well - obviously I know my own tool, which is admittedly not the easiest to understand if you open it the first time. But I encourage you to open the composition and play with it yourself (which is what Peacock is about).

Did you just re-made that? Impressive!
I've heard about Aviary Peacock before, but it seems that I should have a look at it again.
The funny thing is that I was checking out your latest incubator projects like an hour ago.
Coincidence?

Looks like you haven't heard of Aviary Peacock yet. "AutoPainter" which is one of its plugins allows you to build stuff like that, too. I took the freedom to recreate one of those examples here: http://aviary.com/artists/mario/images/yes_we_can
