a description of the Japanese understanding of space from a documentary on the Sugimoto House in Kyoto: “Forget all about the rules of western architecture. It is impossible to understand the organization of areas or their hierarchy. Rooms are simply placed side by side. They’re not all the same size. There’s no furniture to indicate their purpose. The codes for deciphering the areas are radically different. Doubtless because in Japan space is not defined in the same way as in Europe. . . In japan a living space only a becomes a space for living, when a functional object is put in it.”

I feel like this house would be a great setting for an art film exploring the complex issues of a family. So many windows, the sleek whiteness and the openness is just begging for raging contrast.

I think I like this so much because it is very anti-materialistic. I would love to have such a full looking, empty house.
