The Techno Viking Archive

November 19th, 2009

Everyone knows the Techno Viking video, right? It’s that weird guy dancing in the street during the Berlin Fuck Parade in 2000. But what I didn’t know it that the original title is actually Kneecam No 1 and that it was filmed by Matthias Fritsch. He did some research on his video and found out that it was viewed over 20,000,000 times and made a small exhibition about it: The Techno Viking Archive.
Remember: “The Techno Viking doesn’t dance to the music, but the music dances to the Techno Viking”.

Escape Vehicle No.6 versus The Space Chair Project

November 18th, 2009

In 2004, Simon Faithfull was commissioned to do a live event by The Arts Catalyst for its Artists Airshow. He decided to launch a weather balloon with a chair attached to it. The audience could follow the live video feed on a large screen. A typical art project.
In 2009, the advertising agency Grey London did The Space Chair Project for their client Toshiba. They also launched a chair with a weather balloon, except that they used HD cameras to create the highest HD TV ad in the world. But somehow they don’t mention Simon Faithfull anywhere …

Update: According to this article, Simon was part of the team who did the ad.

Subconscious Effect of Daylight

November 16th, 2009

“Subconscious Effect of Daylight” is a side table by Daniel Rybakken, or maybe it’s a lamp … Underneath the tabletop there’s a lamp which gives the illusion of the sun shining through a window because of the artificial shadows that are cast to the floor.

House H by Sou Fujimoto

November 15th, 2009

House H is the latest project by Sou Fujimoto Architects in Tokyo. It’s new experiment to find a balance between volumes, spaces and light. There’re a lot of stairs in this house and I’m also wondering where the bedrooms are. But I wouldn’t mind if Sou would do some projects in Berlin. Here are 2 other projects by Sou Fujimoto: House N and Next Generation House.

Study For A Mirror

November 13th, 2009

Tonight I saw a very nice presentation on the work of rAndom international, a London-based art and design collective, hosted by designtransfer of the UDK Berlin. One of the project that Hannes Koch presented was “Study For A Mirror” which is actually the next generation of their other piece called “A Study Of Three Mirrors“.

‘Study For A Mirror’ is a ‘temporary light painting’. Face recognition technology detects when the viewer is standing in front of the work and then directly paints the onlookers image in light. The Image then gradually fades. Evectively a mirror this work offers the ultimate immediate, yet ephemeral, contemporary portrait.

Chris O’Shea wrote the software with openFrameworks & openCV.
