October 29th, 2010

Last September, Dominic Wilcox did the Speed Creating project, he tried to make something creative every single day. The results are amazing. Here’re 4 of them:

Day 2: Pop Up Train Tray Surprise

Day11: Beach Ball Chair

Day 24: I remember you well – a tin foil bust of Dominic Wilcox at the age of 21.

Day 28: Inflated socks

The Beauty of Lacks and Limitation

October 29th, 2010

At the end of April of this year, Manuel Bürger held a one week workshop “The Beauty of Lacks and Limitation” at the New Media department of the Merz Akademie in Stuttgart, Germany. The course was about: Design Awareness / Composing in Boundaries / Template Distending /  Breaking inflexible Patterns in Design / Carrying Ideas into Effect. He asked the students to learn to know their software and then to try to bring the software to its knees. The second step was to carry their ideas into effect.
You should definitely check out the website of the workshop. There’re a lot of great examples, research and inspiration, but also the results made by the students. These are my 2 favorites.

Julian Beekmann used the calc-function of Apple Pages to draw mountains with beautiful stone fillings.

Ulricke Schock made these animated GIF’s with TextEdit.

Internet Landscapes

Internet Landscapes by Niko Princen. I really like a lot of his work. You should definitely check out these 2: Lorem Scriptum and Abstract-O-Matic. Maybe you’ll like the abtract version of today and tomorrow even better.

dump.fm

October 22nd, 2010

dump.fm is an online platform where the users can post pictures for realtime communication and collaboration. Just think of a chat room with almost only animated GIFs. It is definitely not the right place for everyone, but if you’re up for it … register and join the fun.
dump.fm is holding an IRL event in New York starting tonight, running till October 31th. If you’re in Brooklyn you can go and see the exhibition and you might even see some live dump.fm action at 319 Scholes.

One of the images posted on dump.fm was this one by Ryder Ripps, one of the founders. It was the result of a few iterations.

Jasper Elings added that animated gif to one of his “It was a great opening” images. The result is pure bliss.

An other example of the dump.fm remix culture is this other one made by Ryder. You might recognize the source image, an animated gif made by davidope for today and tomorrow’s 5th birthday last summer.

Katharina Fengler

You could say that these artworks by Katharina Fengler are just some ink on paper. But you can’t look away, can you?
