Osso is a new series of chairs designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for the Italian brand Mattiazzi. The chairs are made of oak, maple or ash, but it’s their production process that I find interesting. The pieces are milled by a digitally controlled CNC machine. This is probably one of the few ways to produce this design on a larger scale.

I’m pretty sure that I’ll never buy a glass table but the black version of Nendo‘s transparent table is the closest what I would consider. They’ve cast wood with a strong grain in clear acrylic and assembled the pieces to create a table. The level of detail is quite impressive, the edges are beveled and the ends even have the matching grain.

Form Art is a project made by Alexei Shulgin in 1997. In 1997! He used formal elements of the HTML language, without adding anything to them, to create compositions, animations, images, … The website is packed with little pieces, but make sure to check out the animations and the game.

I can’t really say why, but I’ve just watched “Art Tape: Live with / Think about” by Michael Bell-Smith three times.

Thru Religion is a 3D printed object created by Drzach & Suchy. The object has multiple shadow-casting elements, semi-randomly arranged in three dimensions. When you rotate the object to the right position in front of a light source, you can see 3 different religious symbols. You should also check out these 2 videos of their Shadow Casting Panels.

Replaced Mona Lisa is Mike Ruiz latest work. He selected the Mona Lisa, the girl, inside Photoshop and used the tool Content-Aware Fill to create the missing parts of the background. The resulting image is a potential landscape as interpreted by the software. The image was sent to an painting manufacturer in China where an oil painting was produced.

L017 is Angelo Bramanti and Giuseppe Siracusa and they prefer the use of waste materials and recycled objects to create their artworks. For their “Through The Barricades” piece they’ve used vinyl records. I quite like it but I’m not sure about the frame.

12:31 is a photographic series by Croix Gagnon and Frank Schott. In 1993, a convicted murderer was executed. His body was given to science, segmented, and photographed for research. Croix and Frank used that footage to create these 7 photographs. An animation of the 1871 slices was played fullscreen on a computer, which was moved around by an assistant while being photographed in a dark environment. The resulting images are long-exposure “light paintings” of the entire cadaver. Stunning work! Prints are for sale for $700 and all proceeds benefit Amnesty International.
