Tensile Series by James Clar

March 26th, 2009

“Tensile Series” by James Clar is a series of spatial light sculptures that use tense wires to create a self-supporting structure. The wires that create tension, holding up the structure, also provide the electricity. They are minimal sculptures and floor lamps.

Chairs for the Dysfunctional

March 20th, 2009

Alice Wang designed 5 “Chairs for the Dysfunctional”. The “Skilled Tilter” would fit me perfectly, it would also be interesting to try out the “Constant Shaker”. It calculates the amount of calories burnt when one fidgets or shakes their leg when sitting down. The “Status Announcer” would be for everyone with a Facebook or Twitter account.

Duo Fringe Glasses by Bless

March 20th, 2009

Bless presented these Duo Fringe Glasses last September in Paris, they are part from their Nothingneath collection.  I’m probably going to have a good laugh when I ever see someone with these. The idea is interesting though.
If you still want to spend €200 on them, head over to Colette.

Rotational Moulded Shoe

March 12th, 2009

Rotational Moulding is an industrial production technique, used for creating many hollow plastic objects. Marloes ter Bhömer is a Dutch designer based in London, who took this technique to produce this shoe. I guess this is more some sort of conceptual exercise than a real product idea.
You can go and see this project, among many others, at the exhibition Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2009 at the Design Museum in London till the 14th of June.

Bootleg Objects ReBraun

March 9th, 2009

I just rediscovered the Sound Series of the Bootleg Objects. This is the ReBraun, an MP3 jukebox and server based on the Braun “Audio 1 Kompaktanlage” designed by Dieter Rams in 1962. It was build in 2002 – 2003, so I guess the hardware isn’t that up to date anymore. But I still would like to have on, the 12000 euro pricetag is just a little hefty – the loudspeaker unit is not included.

The Objectified Poster

March 5th, 2009

Objectified is the most anticipated movie of the year, at least for me.It is actually a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. The graphic design studio Build designed the logo and this poster. The logo is hidden in the 6th row, the bottom row shows you the products used to make this film.

BadKast

March 4th, 2009

BadKast is a combination of a bath and a closet. Anna van der Lei was inspired by the Finish saunas who have 2 rooms, the sauna itself and a dressing room. You can open the doors on both sides and place this piece of furniture anywhere you want.

Prince Charles Chair

March 3rd, 2009

This is the Prince Charles Side Chair, a collaboration between Peter Shire and Modernica Studio. It does look familiar right? But still a little weird … the legs.
Some years ago, Modernica bought the original molds of the Eames Shell Chairs from Herman Miller. They just didn’t buy the rights to the name, so they can’t call them Eames chairs. Actually Modernica still produces the fiberglass version, Vitra on the other hand produces a plastic version.
