Hilti DX 460-MX

December 21st, 2007

Snoop from The Wire knows her stuff when she shops for some tools. The Hilti DX 460-MX Powder Actuated Fastening Tool: fully automatic, 27 caliber charge and it manages the recoil just fine. O yeah, the 5th and final season of The Wire starts January 6th!

Android

November 13th, 2007

android.jpgYesterday, Google released the software development kit for its mobile platform called Android. Of course I had to install it and give it a try, it comes with sample code and some standard features like a web browser and a maps application.
The standard graphical user interface looks dull to me, especially since I played around with an iPhone before. The screen resolution of the demo phone is only 320 by 240 and it’s not that snappy, maybe that’s because it’s only an emulation.
Although the iPhone is available since last Friday here in Germany, I didn’t buy one for the simple reason that the iPhone and the contract are too expensive. But if I could get one from the States (over a €100 cheaper!), I would.
So Apple, I’m quite curious to play with the iPhone SDK next February! Bring it on!

Creativity Conducted

October 19th, 2007

Blitz made this interactive wall for Adobe Creativity Conducted. It’s an amazing combination of Flash, WiiFlash, Papervision3D and the latest Flash player.

“Adobe Creativity Conducted” Interactive Wall Experience features a holographic-like projection system on which you can paint images and designs using a Nintendo Wii remote control. This full screen Flash application runs in HD resolution, and was premiered during the primary Adobe party of the MAX 07 Conference in Chicago. The experience ran uninterrupted for the duration of the party (4 hours), and received nonstop foot traffic resulting in 68 artistic creations submitted as images to a Flickr account.

You can find some more info at the Blitz labs.

Growth rendering device

October 15th, 2007

growth_rendering_device.jpgI’m quite fascinated with drawing robots … This ‘growth rendering device’ by David Bowen takes it to the next level.

This system provides light and food in the form of hydroponic solution for the plant. The plant reacts to the device by growing. The device in-turn reacts to the plant by producing a rasterized inkjet drawing of the plant every twenty-four hours. After a new drawing is produced the system scrolls the roll of paper approximately four inches so a new drawing can be produced during the next cycle. This system is allowed two run indefinitely and the final outcome is not predetermined.

Singing Tesla Coil

August 31st, 2007

This is a solid-state Tesla coil. The primary runs at its resonant frequency in the 41 KHz range, and is modulated from the control unit in order to generate the tones you hear. Yes, it is the actual high voltage sparks that are making the noise. Every cycle of the music is a burst of sparks at 41 KHz, triggered by digital circuitry at the end of a “long” piece of fiber optics.

Electricity! Rave on.

iPhone accelerometer hack

August 30th, 2007

The iPhone has an accelerometer to detect if you tilt it (to turn the browser or picture) or when bring it to your ear (to dim the screen), which is quite clever. A few months ago some videos popped up with people showing how they controlled content on their pc with a Wii remote. So it was just a mater of time till similar projects for the iPhone appeared. Of course this is way more interesting as you have a screen in ‘your game controller’. You can read more about it here.
