Empty City

July 21st, 2010

This is a guest post by spanier.

they are building a empty city for nobody!

hamburg is one of those cities which right now gets massively gentrificated. in the last 10-20 years they’ve built so much big, ugly, empty useless office spaces. and apparently nobody really needs those offices since more than a million square meters are unoccupied.

the sad thing about this is that the law here doesn’t allow you to live in an office building. so the living space is getting rare and extremely expensive. i am looking since 3-4 years for a nice flat for
my girlfriend and me. no chances to get something payable.

i planned to do this series some time ago but never did it. when pieter asked me to participate at the 5 years birthday of today and tomorrow, it was a perfect motivation to get on my bike and start shooting. all shots were in a circle of 4 km around the place i live in, the harbour.

Popcorn Clouds

February 8th, 2010

I would be soo happy to see such nice clouds over Berlin! But no, it doesn’t look like that the winter will end soon. I’ve actually been offline during the last few days because they can’t connect my new place to the internetz due to the frozen ground.

Martian landscapes

November 7th, 2009

No, these aren’t some abstract paintings or some generative art, but photos from the surface of Mars. The NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been orbiting Mars since 2006 at a height approximately 300 km. The MRO has a very good camera on board: the HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which has a resolution of a few inches per pixel. You can find more stunning photos at The Big Picture.

The Oldest Living Things In The World

October 1st, 2009

Rachel Sussman photographed some of “The Oldest Living Things In The World”. This actinobacteria from Siberia is supposed to be over 400,000 years old. Mind blowing.

actinobacteria

But actually this La Llareta from the atacama dessert in Chile, has the best looks for its age, it can be up to 3,000 years old.

Solar Transit of the Altantis Space Shuttle

May 18th, 2009

This an amazing photo of the solar transit of the space shuttle Atlantis, made by Thierry Legault on May 12th. The duration of the transit was only 0.3 seconds and the shuttle was in orbit at a height of 260 km. You can see another photo of the solar transit of the Atlantis and Hubble telescope together here.

Hamburg

March 27th, 2009

I’ll be in Hamburg on April 1st and 2nd, for the first time ever … shame on me … maybe. So I need some tips, where to go to, exhibitions, galleries, shops … Is there some website like berlin.unlike but for Hamburg? Hamburg is like a blank sheet of paper to me. Thanks!

This shit’s getting way too complicated for me

February 6th, 2009

This quote comes from the book “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance” written by Barack Obama, indeed that Obama, but it is actually from a school friend. He wrote his memoirs back in 1995 and the audio book read by Obama himself was released in 2005. He even received a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album in 2006 for it. There are some more interesting quotes available like “You ain’t my bitch, nigga”, listen to them here. This screams to become the next internet meme!

And here is the first remix:

Skateistan

February 5th, 2009

Skateistan

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first dedicated co-educational skateboarding school. The school will engage with the growing numbers of urbanised youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding and provide new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction and education. Students will be selected from a range of different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Student capacity will be developed in skateboarding, skateboarding instruction, project management, life skills and English. Our aim is to develop a program that empowers youth to take leadership on issues important to them and build networks that will counter current ethnic barriers.

The NYTimes wrote an article on this project and made this video.
