Drum Spoons
November 6th, 2008Daito Manabe has a new trick up his sleeve; you know his facial Electric Stimulus right? With his myoelectric sensors he can’t only control his muscles but use them the other way around too. By flexing his muscles he can generate small electric pulses which he can use to control other systems. In this video you can see how he controls the sound by moving his hands, the sensors are hidden under his sleeves and are connected to his underarms. Under the surface of the table, there is a slider with an electromagnet on it, which he also controls by flexing his muscles. So it is the electromagnet that lets the spoons dance around on the table. At the end of the video you can see the hidden technology.
I must say this is quite a nice performance setup. Daito was responsable for the sound and programming, the device programming was done by Motoi Ishibashi, the table fixture design by Seiichi Saito and myoelectric sensor by Masaki Teruoka.
And as bonus, here is an other video of his Electric Stimulus where he controls the faces of 2 of his friends.
Drone #2
November 6th, 2008Drone #2 by Björn Schülke is an autonomous observing system.
The futuristic appearance of “Drone #2″ seems like a requisite from a science fiction film. The autonomous hi-tech construct, consisting of solar cells, heat sensors, propellors, videochips and a TFT monitor is suspended from the ceiling and reacts to the “warmblooded” spectator without him or her being able to directly influence its movement.
This construction, at first glance finely structured and fragile, mutates, once activated, into a menacing surveillance apparatus whose function is nothing but permanent observation.
