Ausgebrannt
March 4th, 2011Ausgebrannt is a series of stools and low tables by Kasper Hamacher. I actually don’t really like them, but the production process looks like fun. By the way, ausgebrannt is German for burnt out.

“Souviens toi que tu vas mourir” (remember that you will die) is a morbid version of the classic monoblock chair by pool.

This Bench Chair by Thomas Schnur is some of the best design I’ve seen lately. All hail to the monoblock.

Pressed Chair is a light, stackable metal chair stamped out of a 2.5 mm aluminium sheet. The value of the design excels in the intent of creating a piece out of one single material without any joints or connectors. Furthermore the manufacturing produces no waste material and is 100% recyclable. Designed by Harry Thaler.

Soft Wood is a series of chairs designed by Veronika Wildgruber that appear at first to be made in fabric with the soft appearance of pillows. But in reality they are sculpted in solid wood. The chairs trick the mind because the surface and texture connotes the opposite of what we think and know about the characteristics of wood.

seen at DMY Berlin 2010
At this years DMY Berlin, Daniel Lorch presented his latest project: Split Chair. It’s a combination of traditional tube bending with the newest 3D laser-technology. The result is exactly how I like it: smart and simple.

Tonight is the opening of the DMY 2010 International Design Festival in Berlin and I’m really looking forward to see some new inspiring work. The next few days are packed with events and workshops. The DMY Maker Lab sure does sound interesting, but also the symposium on Saturday with the topic “Are nerds the new designers?” is worth to check out.
I’m curious how the DMY version of this Tape Installation by Numen / For Use will look like. Especially in one of the huge hangars of the former city airport Berlin Tempelhof.

Ikea Robotics was Adam Lassy his thesis project at ITP, Tisch School of the Arts in New York. He modified Ikea furniture to create mobile, wireless robots which can sense the spatial needs of it’s owner. The first video demos this behaviour. The second I find even more interesting, here he programmed the furniture to display some animal characteristics.
